Review: Dreyer’s English

Going into Dreyer’s English, I suspected I would find a heap of information on writing, and that’s exactly what I did. However, I didn’t expect to find it so humorous and witty.

Benjamin Dreyer delivers much of the information within the pages of this book through humorous stories and uses the English language to twist humor out of what could easily be – and often is – a dull subject. It caught me off guard in the best way, as it kept me flipping the pages.

Of course, what book of knowledge would be complete without the knowledge, and there’s plenty to go around here. I would imagine the mileage may vary depending on the reader/writer, but even the seasoned vet would find a good refresher or three in these pages. Dreyer covers everything you would expect from punctuation to spelling, but also dives into easily confused words and phrases, grammar, and advice that goes beyond the mechanics of writing.

Should you read this book? If you are a writer or just a stickler for understanding writing in general, you should buy this book and keep it on your desk. It truly is that good. Dreyer does get caught up in his stories, which, in some paragraphs, obscures the point, but that doesn’t happen often enough to hurt this wonderful guide.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
